Class 11 students under the Punjab School Education Board have until 30 September 2026 to change their subject, group or stream. After that date, no change will be allowed. And in Class 12, PSEB has barred subject and stream changes altogether.
The board published the notice — “Regarding the amendment to regulations concerning the change of subjects and streams for 11th and 12th Classes” — on its website on 14 September 2026. According to The Tribune’s report of 16 September 2026, the amendment was approved at a board meeting on 6 August and notified by the academic branch on 11 September.
Under the old rule, a school head could permit a subject or group change within one month of admission. That window was tight — a student who settled into Class 11 in late July and realised by September that Commerce was not what they expected had already missed it.
The revised regulation widens that window to 30 September, but closes it hard. The Tribune reports that changes are still subject to the permission of the head of the institution, so this is not an automatic right. You ask; the principal decides.
The second half of the amendment is the stricter one. Class 12 students can no longer change subject or stream at all. If you want to study something else in Class 12, the route left open is to take it as an additional subject alongside your existing group.

Specifically, the exact regulation clause number, the procedure a school must follow to record the change, any fee, and whether Open School candidates are covered are all unconfirmed. A Hindi report in Rashtriya Ujala dated 15 September 2026 says the rule applies to all government, aided and board-affiliated private schools in Punjab and takes immediate effect. We have not been able to confirm that scope against the notice itself.
If you are in Class 11 Commerce and still deciding, the practical question is no longer “can I switch later?” It is “do I understand what I have signed up for?” You have a little over a week to find out.
The honest test is to open the actual chapters rather than read a description of them. If you are in Class 12, the change does not affect what you study this year, because the option to switch is gone either way. What it does affect is planning. An additional subject is now the only door, and additional subjects carry their own workload on top of a board year. Talk to your class in-charge or principal this week, not in the last two days. The change needs the head of institution’s permission and the school has to process it, so leaving it to 29 September is how students miss deadlines that were technically still open.
Ask the school to show you the notice. Ask whether your intended new group has seats and a teacher. And ask what happens to the marks you have already earned in the subject you are leaving — that is a school-level question the notice may not answer.
