The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has set a hard deadline of 30 September 2026 for Class XI students to change their stream, subject, or group. If you're reading this after that date, the window has closed—but you may still have limited options depending on your situation.
On 14 September 2026, PSEB issued a notification amending the rules for Class XI and XII stream and subject changes. (The Tribune reported this on 16 September.) The amendment followed a Board meeting on 6 August 2026. The key change: previously, students could change their stream or subject "within one month of admission"—with deadlines varying by school. Now all Class XI students have a single deadline: 30 September 2026. After that date, no changes are allowed.
Here's what shifted:
For commerce students specifically, this affects your ability to switch into or out of the Commerce stream, or to change your elective subjects (for example, from one language to another).
If you're in Class XI, the deadline has passed. Formal changes require only your school head's approval—no separate PSEB approval or fee is mentioned in the notification.
Under the regular procedure, no changes are allowed after 30 September 2026. The notification doesn't mention exceptions, late petitions, or appeals—ask your principal if any exist.
If you're in Class XII, your stream and subjects are locked. No changes are possible for the rest of your Class XII studies or exams.
However, the regulation does mention one option: Class XII students may pursue an "additional subject" through their institution. The PSEB notification doesn't explain what this means, how it works, what it costs, or who's eligible. Some schools may allow you to study a subject beyond your main stream subjects—for example, a commerce student adding an extra language or social science subject—but check with your school head about availability, cost, and how it affects your Class XII exam.
Contact your school head immediately. Tell them you want to change your stream or subject and ask directly:
Don't assume the deadline is absolute—some schools may have processes for exceptional cases. Still, the PSEB regulation is clear: 30 September 2026 is the cutoff under the standard procedure.
If you're in Class XII and regret your choice of stream or subjects, your stream is locked. Explore the "additional subject" option with your school head—it might allow you to study an extra subject alongside your main subjects, though the PSEB notice doesn't clarify rules or eligibility.
Ask your school about: which additional subjects are offered in your stream, any fees or costs involved, and whether the additional subject exam counts toward your final marks or grade.
If you changed stream before 30 September: you're locked into your new stream through Class XI and XII. If you chose Commerce, prioritize mastering Financial Accounting, Business Studies, and Economics immediately. These subjects have dense, cumulative syllabi—catching up early builds a stronger foundation for your final exams.
If you didn't change: your current stream and subjects are fixed for the year. Deepen your understanding now, especially in Commerce, where consistent practice in accounting entries and economic theory is essential.
If you're in Class XII: your stream is locked with no option to change. Use the additional subject route (if available and suited to your goals) to broaden your learning, but plan around your fixed main subjects. Do not waste time wishing you had chosen differently—focus on excelling in what you have.
The PSEB has set a firm deadline of 30 September 2026 for Class XI stream and subject changes. If you missed this, contact your school principal immediately to ask whether any exception or late petition is possible. For Class XII students, your stream is fixed, but explore the additional subject option with your school. Plan your syllabus and study strategy accordingly—your stream is now locked for your board exam year.
